Local transportation

Buses

A variety of bus services is readily available in Sri Lanka. Normal, Intercity, Semi- Luxury and Luxury buses in which can travel to any part of Sri Lanka

Luxury buses

These buses are air-conditioned with comfortable seatand provide entertainment to the passengers. They could also accommodate a fair amount of luggage

Intercity buses

Air-conditioned intercity bus travels from one city to another with limited stopovers to make the journey fast comfortable to the passenger. In these buses only a limited space is available for luggage.

Normal buses

operated by both the public and private sector. Normal buses that are non A/C with few facilities stopping over at every half to pick and drop passengers have an island-wide coverage. Most of the Sri Lanka people use these buses for daily traveling from one city to another. They are operated from morning to late at night.

Tuk-Tuks (three-wheeler taxis)

Tuk-tuks are very common in Sri Lanka, you can literally find Tuks anywhere at any time, especially in the tourist destinations. Even if you are tempted to take the bus, it can get tricky at times, and if you get lost it would take you some time to get back on track, so we recommend using Tuk Tuks.

By train

Train can be slower than buses, depending on whether you are on a line that offers an express train or not, but are generally more comfortable and even less expensive than buses. There are 3 classes of trains, although 1st and 2nd class are only available on some intercity and express trains. Traveling 3rd class is not as bad as it may sound however and often the difference between 3rd and 2nd is a missing armrest between seats.

Taxis

There are many taxi services that operate in Sri Lanka, they range from luxury cars and SUV s to the very popular mini tata, nano cars used by many taxi services.

HiringĀ  vehicle (cars/vans)

Your travel agent /tour operator would provide chauffeur- driven or else coaches according to your preference.

Self -driven vehicles

Firstly you will need an international driving license from your own country which you will have to get it validated in Sri Lanka licensing center. You cannot legally drive in Sri Lanka without it.
